| ::: Note from Club Manager |
We are already into the second month of the year, where has the time gone? I am sorry to say the news has not been positive with the world economic crisis and the dreadful events in Palestine. However, I want to stay positive and encourage our members to focus on their fitness routines, stick to their New Years resolutions and, if you are not already, start to work out on a regular basis. Working out and maintaining a disciplined routine can have a significant effect on your mental state and keep you in a positive frame of mind. I want to offer a few tips on how to maintain your interest as running on the treadmill of doing yet another set of stomach crunches can get tedious (believe me, I should know, I do many myself). Try to workout at a time of day that suits you, you will enjoy it more. If you enjoy it, you will stick to it. Set yourself goals, maybe a weight loss, maybe a longer time on the cardio machines, try a timed Kilometer and test yourself monthly. Workout with a friend, make sure you have a Body and Soul workout chart, get a monthly assessment with trainer. Remember, incentive is the biggest motivator.
We have 2 important events as an incentive to motivate and encourage you:
- The February 7 Summit Challenge (142,000 ft. to climb the 7 highest
mountains on each continent.
- The Annual GMU Ajman Fun Run – March 13th. Families 2.4 k run
and the 7k Fun Run. I will be running myself so hope to see lots of our
members running
(or at least supporting). Let’s all make it a fun, healthy morning out by the sea. Click here to Download Registration Form PDF Format / Word Format

::: HEALTH BITES::: |
 |
It's hard to argue with the positive health benefits of a diet rich in vegetables and fruits: lower blood pressure, reduced risk of heart disease and stroke, lower risk of eye and digestive problems and a reduction to high blood sugar that can lead to Diabetes. |
| Most people should aim for at least nine servings (around 4½ cups) of vegetables and fruits a day (potatoes, especially MacDonald’s fries!!!, do not count as they are high in starch). The best bet is to choose a variety of colors to give your body the right mix of nutrients; dark leafy greens, cooked tomatoes, apples, berries, beets, carrots and oranges. |

| RECIPE OF THE MONTH |
| Try one of our tasty, healthy menus one evening for you and your family. Zucchini with Yogurt Sauce: |
|
|
Ingredients:
1 firm zucchini, approximately 1 pound
2 tablespoons water
1/2 cup nonfat yogurt
1 clove garlic, finely minced
2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh dill or mint leaves
1 teaspoon white wine vinegar, or more to taste
Freshly ground black pepper
Additional herbs for garnish |
Cut the zucchini in half and grate it into coarse shreds either in a food processor or by hand, or cut the zucchini in diagonal slices, then into strips. Make sure the strips are not too fine or the dish will be mushy.
Warm a wide nonstick frying pan and add 2 tablespoons water and the zucchini. Cook gently over a medium flame, turning occasionally until the zucchini has cooked and the moisture has evaporated, about 7 to 10 minutes. If the zucchini threatens to stick, add small amounts of water as needed.
While the squash is cooking, mix the yogurt with the garlic, herbs, vinegar, and pepper. As soon as the zucchini is done, add the yogurt mixture and gently toss together over a medium flame until the yogurt is warm. Serve with a dusting of pepper and a garnish of fresh herbs.
Recipe yields 3-1/2 cups (2 to 4 servings). |
